Jurgen Klopp Considered for Shock Anfield Comeback Amid Arne Slot Turmoil
Liverpool’s hierarchy are reportedly evaluating the possibility of bringing Jurgen Klopp back to Anfield on an interim basis as pressure intensifies on current manager Arne Slot. The club’s poor run of results has placed the Dutchman under significant scrutiny just months after delivering the Premier League title.

Liverpool’s recent 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League added to a troubling stretch in which the team has lost nine of its last 12 matches in all competitions. The slump represents Liverpool’s worst run in 71 years. Slot acknowledged the alarming form, pointing to the squad’s extensive summer investment of more than £400 million ($528m) and stating that the current trajectory “cannot continue”. Former club captain Jamie Carragher suggested in The Telegraph that Slot may have only a week to stabilise results, citing upcoming fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds United as decisive.
Carragher wrote that anything below seven points from those three matches could deepen the crisis, stressing that Liverpool cannot maintain the performance drop experienced over the past three months. He also noted Liverpool’s long-standing reluctance to dismiss managers, including those who have delivered major achievements.
Reports from The Sun claim Liverpool executives have discussed the option of asking Klopp to return temporarily should Slot fail to halt the downturn. Klopp, currently serving as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, is viewed as a short-term solution, with Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique named as the club’s preferred long-term candidate. The report states that internal conversations reflect concerns that Slot may have “lost the dressing room,” and the board may wait until the new year before making a final decision. German journalist Michael Reif also described the situation as severe, saying Liverpool have been “practically burned to the ground” and suggesting Slot should “watch out” amid talk of a potential Klopp return.
Slot confirmed he had spoken with the club’s owners following the defeat to PSV. He stated that discussions have remained consistent since his arrival and emphasised his commitment to improving results. Slot explained that reflecting on decisions becomes more intense during challenging periods and pointed to the importance of maintaining the club’s core principles, adding that the team must work to capitalise on strong passages of play despite external focus on their struggles.
Liverpool currently sit 12th in the Premier League, a stark contrast to their position at the top of the table earlier in the season. The team trails league leaders Arsenal by 11 points after 12 matches. Sunday’s match against West Ham carries significant weight, as the Hammers have collected seven points from their last three fixtures. Liverpool have lost six of their previous seven league matches, yet the upcoming games against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds provide critical opportunities to shift momentum.
