'I Don't Know Why I'm on the Bench': Salah Hints at Liverpool Goodbye After Explosive Interview

‎Mohamed Salah delivered a jaw-dropping interview after Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Leeds on Saturday, accusing the club of “throwing me under the bus” and admitting his relationship with manager Arne Slot has completely broken down. The Egyptian forward, who has been benched for the last three Premier League matches, suggested he plans to say goodbye to fans in Liverpool’s clash with Brighton next weekend.

‎Salah has been named among the substitutes in Liverpool’s recent league encounters with West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds, as Slot desperately tries to revive the team’s poor 2025-26 campaign. Liverpool edged a 1-0 win over West Ham but failed to build momentum, drawing with Sunderland thanks to an own goal before letting the lead slip twice against Leeds.
‎This season has seen Salah struggle to match his outstanding numbers from the previous campaign, when he racked up 29 goals and 18 assists. He has also been criticised for staying silent during Liverpool’s troubled spell. Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, said: “I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets man of the match or he needs a new contract. I'd like to see Mo come out as one of the leaders and speak for the team.”
‎Salah responded fiercely after the Leeds game, revealing he intends to greet fans at Anfield next weekend before joining Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations squad. Speaking to The Times, he expressed disbelief at his current situation:
‎“I can’t believe it, I’m very, very disappointed. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season.”
‎He said he has no idea why he has been benched:
‎“Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus… I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.”
‎Salah also claimed promises made to him in the summer have not been honoured:
‎“I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I’m on the bench for three games, so I can’t say they kept the promise.”
‎He added that his rapport with Slot has collapsed:
‎“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why.”
‎Despite his frustration, Salah reaffirmed his emotional attachment to Liverpool:
‎“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much.”
‎He also shared that he invited his parents to the Brighton match, hinting it may be a farewell moment:
‎“In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now. I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans.”
‎Although he avoided confirming any transfer interest, including from Saudi Arabia, Salah admitted he expects criticism from Carragher:
‎“Tomorrow Carragher is going to go for me again and again and that’s fine… After what I have done for the club it really hurts.”
‎He argued that the scrutiny he receives differs from that given to other stars:
‎“Harry Kane was not scoring for ten games and everyone said he would score again. When it comes to me, everyone is like ‘he needs to be on the bench.’”
‎Salah’s legacy at Liverpool remains towering. Since arriving from Roma in 2017, he has scored 250 goals in 420 matches and sits third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. His silverware haul includes seven major trophies, among them two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League crown.
‎Liverpool now face the challenge of responding to Salah’s explosive comments as they prepare to meet Inter Milan in the Champions League.
