‎Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Handed One-Match Touchline Ban and £8,000 Fine After Mourinho-Like Celebration vs Liverpool

‎Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has been handed a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine by the Football Association (FA) following his red card during the 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool. The Italian admitted to a charge of misconduct after his emotional celebration of Estevao’s dramatic last-minute winner at Stamford Bridge.

‎The victory over Liverpool ended Chelsea’s winless streak in the Premier League and marked a key moment for Maresca’s side. Estevao, the teenage Brazilian forward, struck in the fifth minute of added time, scoring his first league goal for the club. The decisive goal sent Stamford Bridge into jubilation, with Maresca sprinting down the touchline to celebrate alongside his players near the corner flag.
‎Maresca’s touchline dash drew comparisons to Jose Mourinho’s memorable celebration against Manchester United in 2004, when the Portuguese manager, then in charge of Porto, famously ran the length of the Old Trafford touchline after Costinha’s late equaliser. That moment helped Porto progress to the Champions League quarter-finals and ultimately win the competition. Mourinho later joined Chelsea in 2004, leading the club to domestic success in his first season.

‎Referee Anthony Taylor dismissed Maresca for his second bookable offence after the celebration scenes, having previously cautioned the Italian for dissent. The FA confirmed the details of Maresca’s punishment, stating:
‎“Enzo Maresca has been given a one-match touchline ban and £8,000 fine for misconduct during the Premier League game between Chelsea and Liverpool on Saturday, 4 October. It was alleged that the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal around the 96th minute. Enzo Maresca subsequently admitted the charge and accepted the standard penalty.”
‎Following the game, Maresca defended his reaction, describing it as a natural response to a significant moment. Speaking at the Trento Sports Festival, he explained: “It was a huge emotion (against Liverpool). It's my second season at Chelsea and it was the first time we won at home in the last minute. The sending-off? Football is passion, instinct. I probably didn't have time to think. It was an instinctive reaction, but I think it was worth it.”

‎The Chelsea manager will now miss the upcoming Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. The Blues aim to extend their momentum from the Liverpool win against a Forest side struggling under new manager Ange Postecoglou, who has yet to record a league victory.
‎Chelsea will return to European competition next week when they host Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 22. After losing their opening group match to Bayern Munich, the London club recovered with a 1-0 win over Benfica, a game that featured an emotional reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho but no touchline theatrics.
