Curtis Jones Confirms Mohamed Salah Apologised to Liverpool Squad After Explosive Post-Match Interview
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has disclosed that Mohamed Salah personally apologised to his team-mates after his controversial comments earlier this month, stressing that the dressing room remains firmly united behind the Egyptian forward.

Salah sparked intense debate following Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 Premier League draw with Leeds United, where the Reds surrendered the lead twice at Elland Road. After being named on the bench for the third consecutive match, the forward delivered a striking post-match interview in which he claimed he had been “thrown under the bus” and suggested his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had deteriorated.
The former Roma and Chelsea winger said it was “very clear somebody wanted me to get all the blame” and alleged there was no longer any relationship between himself and Slot. Salah added that he felt let down after receiving promises during the summer, only to find himself starting on the bench repeatedly.
“I can’t believe it, I’m very, very disappointed,” Salah said at the time. “I have done so much for this club over the years, especially last season. I was given many promises in the summer and so far I’m on the bench for three games. I don’t think those promises have been kept.”
He also claimed he did not understand why the relationship with Slot had suddenly changed, stating that it seemed someone at the club no longer wanted him there.
Despite the fallout, Slot has insisted the issue is now firmly in the past. After Salah was left out of the side for Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan, the 33-year-old returned to action in last weekend’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton at Anfield.
Coming on for the injured Joe Gomez, Salah provided the assist for Hugo Ekitike’s second goal as Liverpool returned to winning ways. Slot later explained there was “no issue to resolve” and described the decision to introduce Salah against Brighton as an “easy one.”
With Salah now away on international duty ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, Slot reiterated that everyone involved has “moved on” from the episode.
Jones has echoed his manager’s stance, revealing that Salah addressed the squad directly to clear the air. Speaking to Sky Sports, the England international explained that the forward took responsibility for his words and apologised to his team-mates if they were affected.
“Mo is his own man and he can say what he wants,” Jones said. “He apologised to us and said, ‘If I’ve affected anybody or made you feel any sort of way, I apologise.’ That’s the man that he is.”
Jones added that Salah’s attitude within the squad never changed, describing him as positive and upbeat, with no resentment from the rest of the dressing room. He suggested the situation stemmed from a shared desire to win rather than any attempt to disrupt team harmony.
The midfielder also pointed out that frustration from players often comes from a good place, noting that someone being content to sit on the bench without wanting to contribute would be a bigger concern.
Jones himself experienced a similar moment of honesty after Liverpool’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on 26 November, when he described the team’s performances as “unacceptable” and admitted he was beyond being angry.
The 24-year-old explained that his comments were driven by his connection to the club and city, and praised the squad’s collective response during a difficult period. He emphasised that neither Salah nor Slot were blamed internally, with players instead taking responsibility as a group.
According to Jones, the controversy surrounding Salah did not negatively impact the team, but instead sharpened their focus on winning matches. Liverpool have since put together a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
The Reds now turn their attention to Saturday evening’s league trip to Tottenham, where Jones hopes to help secure another positive result. Salah, meanwhile, is expected to feature for Egypt when they face Zimbabwe in their AFCON opener next Monday, before Group B clashes against South Africa on Boxing Day and Angola on 29 December, with the tournament being held in Morocco.
