‎Mohamed Salah, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this year, has since been linked with a potential January exit. The Egypt international appeared as a substitute during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brighton, where he provided the assist for Hugo Ekitike’s second goal of the match.
‎Attention has also turned to Salah’s upcoming international commitments, with the forward set to join the Egypt national team for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this month. Egypt are considered one of the tournament favourites, a run that could see Salah miss up to six Liverpool fixtures if the Pharaohs progress deep into the competition and the club decide against a January sale.
‎Speaking after the Brighton win, Jones moved to clarify the mood inside the Liverpool dressing room. The midfielder told Viaplay that Salah remains highly valued by players, staff, and supporters, and stressed that there is no division within the squad regarding the situation.
‎Jones highlighted Salah’s personal support during difficult moments in his own career, explaining that the forward has consistently been approachable and influential behind the scenes. He added that Salah’s recent comments were personal in nature and not intended to affect the team or its performances.
‎The Liverpool midfielder also stated that he prefers not to comment on another player’s personal matters, but emphasised that Salah made it clear his frustrations were not directed toward teammates. According to Jones, the collective feeling within the squad remains unchanged, with strong respect and appreciation for the Egyptian forward.
‎Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has echoed those sentiments, confirming that he has spoken directly with Salah about his future. Van Dijk revealed that he has expressed a desire for Salah to remain at the club, describing him as one of the leaders within the squad.
‎The centre-back acknowledged Salah’s departure for AFCON and confirmed that communication will continue during the tournament. Van Dijk added that he has no control over the outcome of Salah’s situation but reiterated the importance of having him around the group.
‎Jones’ appearance against Brighton also marked a personal milestone, as he reached 200 senior appearances for Liverpool. The achievement made him the youngest player to reach that figure since Steven Gerrard in 2003.
‎Reflecting on his development, Jones credited Gerrard for providing a defining influence during his academy years. He recalled how direct feedback from the former captain helped shape his mentality, leading to improved discipline and consistency in his performances.
‎Jones explained that Gerrard’s guidance continued as he progressed toward the first team, describing a working relationship that played a key role in his long-term presence at the club. He also spoke about sharing his experiences with younger players, stressing how quickly a football career can move.
‎Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton marked back-to-back league victories for the first time in over a month and only the second such sequence since September. The result eased recent pressure on head coach Arne Slot, with the defending champions now preparing for their upcoming away fixture against Tottenham.
