The Egypt international recently returned to Liverpool’s matchday squad after a high-profile outburst directed at the club and head coach Arne Slot. Salah had expressed frustration after being left out following the draw with Leeds United on December 6, claiming he felt unfairly treated. He was subsequently omitted from the squad for a Champions League trip to Inter, which intensified speculation about a possible January departure, including interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Despite the tension, Salah featured against Brighton last weekend and made an immediate impact by assisting Hugo Ekitike’s second goal in a crucial league win. His return prompted Slot to publicly praise the winger’s influence, highlighting his attacking threat and contribution while reiterating that private discussions between them would remain behind closed doors. Slot also acknowledged Liverpool’s upcoming challenge of coping without Salah during the Africa Cup of Nations, alongside existing injury concerns.
Salah previously played in Italy for Fiorentina and AS Roma before joining Liverpool in 2017. With uncertainty surrounding his role at Anfield, former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann suggested that a move away from the club could be the most practical outcome if tensions persist. Hamann pointed to Serie A as a realistic destination, noting the league’s track record of revitalising experienced players and referencing Inter Milan’s recruitment approach in recent seasons.
Hamann also dismissed the likelihood of a move to Saudi Arabia, citing Salah’s earlier rejection of an offer, and played down potential transfers to elite clubs in England, Spain, or Germany. According to him, Italy could offer the most suitable environment should Salah choose to continue his career in Europe.
Within the Liverpool camp, captain Virgil van Dijk has made it clear he wants Salah to remain at the club. The Dutch defender described Salah as a key leader and confirmed he had personally encouraged him to stay, while accepting that the final decision lies with the player.
Salah is set to join Egypt for the AFCON in Morocco and has not yet confirmed his plans beyond January. Further fuel was added to the debate after body language expert Darren Stanton suggested the winger appeared deeply emotional after the Brighton match, interpreting his reaction as a possible sign of an impending farewell.
