Xabi Alonso Hints at Liverpool Future Amid Real Madrid Pressure as Arne Slot Faces Salah Fallout

Alonso and Slot Under Pressure
Alonso is at the centre of intense managerial speculation following a 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo, with a Champions League clash against Manchester City on the horizon. Liverpool coach Arne Slot also faces scrutiny, with the team struggling in 10th place in the Premier League despite significant summer investment. Slot’s position has been further complicated by tensions with talisman Mohamed Salah after a 3-3 draw with Leeds.
Alonso previously turned down a chance to succeed Jurgen Klopp, opting to stay at Bayer Leverkusen before eventually taking the Madrid job this summer.
Madrid Boss Addresses Future Prospects
When asked about a potential Premier League return, Alonso gave a measured response that neither confirmed nor dismissed the possibility. “For sure, it's something to consider with the English clubs, with my former club. But for now, this is the place that I want to be, and in the future, you never know what can happen,” he said.
On Liverpool’s internal issues, Alonso remained diplomatic. “Those are decisions they have made at Liverpool. No doubt we're missing a lot of details. So it's not for me to give an opinion on that,” he stated.
Two Giants in Crisis
Liverpool’s title defence has faltered, placing Slot under significant pressure. Salah’s omission from the squad against Inter underscores ongoing friction in the dressing room. Real Madrid, meanwhile, trails Barcelona by four points, and Alonso’s prospects could be jeopardized by a heavy defeat to Manchester City.
Alonso views upcoming challenges as opportunities. “The next one is the best one. I think I know myself, and the fans know Manchester City very well from facing them many times in recent years, but I see it as an opportunity more than anything,” he said.
Player Management and Lessons Learned
Alonso drew parallels between the Salah situation at Liverpool and his handling of Vinicius Junior at Madrid. He maintained that his disciplinary approach remains firm. “I would not change anything,” Alonso said, highlighting the importance of adaptation and performance at elite clubs. “After you have to perform, you have to have that interaction with the players. Some days are good, some days are not so good. But from every game, we take steps, and we are in this position now, and we have to face it with good energy, positivity, that’s the only way to turn it around.”
