Spurs Look to Sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool to Boost Leadership and Experience
Tottenham Hotspur are moving quickly to sign Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, originally targeted as a summer free-agent acquisition. With his contract expiring on June 30, Spurs had planned to compete with other clubs for the Scotland international. The transfer, however, has been advanced to provide immediate support to head coach Thomas Frank’s squad, and discussions are progressing positively.

Adding Robertson would enhance Tottenham with experience, leadership, and technical quality, addressing issues in a team that has struggled domestically while performing relatively well in the Champions League, currently fifth in their group ahead of the final fixtures next week.
At Liverpool, Robertson has lost his starting spot to Milos Kerkez, leaving him with limited playing time. While his departure may reduce Liverpool’s natural left-back options, Kostas Tsimikas could be recalled from his loan at Roma. Atletico Madrid had considered strengthening their left defense after losing Reinildo and Cesar Azpilicueta but opted for Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta instead.
Robertson recently discussed his future, expressing his wish to stay at Liverpool but highlighting his desire for regular football. “I’ve got five months left and need to explore options with my family,” he said. Robertson also emphasized the importance of preparing for the World Cup, where he will captain Scotland in their first tournament appearance since 1998.
The relationship between Robertson and Liverpool remains strong, ensuring any exit would be handled respectfully. Both the club and player are expected to prioritize mutual interests, making a potential transfer a smooth and amicable arrangement.
This season, Robertson has appeared in 21 games across all competitions but has started only four Premier League matches due to Kerkez’s emergence. Tottenham’s left-back situation has been affected by injuries to Destiny Udogie, who has played just 10 league games this season. Djed Spence, Archie Gray, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies have all filled in, though Davies will undergo ankle surgery. Spurs recently signed 19-year-old Souza from Santos to strengthen the position.
Robertson has been with Liverpool since 2017, accumulating 363 appearances with 12 goals and 68 assists. He has won two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League, establishing himself as one of the club’s most accomplished left-backs. Renowned for his attacking contributions and defensive commitment, Robertson became a symbol of the Jurgen Klopp era, combining professionalism with leadership.
While his athleticism has naturally declined, Robertson’s leadership and influence remain significant. His professionalism and respect for Liverpool’s management have been evident as he navigated a reduced role. With Kerkez securing the starting position, a move to Tottenham offers Robertson the chance for regular play and continued impact.
Liverpool would need to manage cover at left-back, potentially recalling Tsimikas from Roma, and may look to recruit another left-back in this window or the summer. Tottenham’s pursuit highlights the team’s need for seasoned players to bring character and guidance to a squad that has lost experienced figures to injury and departures. Robertson could become a pivotal presence for Spurs this season and beyond.
