'I Won’t Be Sacked': Arne Slot Trusts Liverpool Board Support Amid Champions League Qualification Pressure

‎Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed confidence that he will remain in charge even if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League, though he admitted such an outcome would be unacceptable. The Dutch coach believes Liverpool’s leadership will factor in the wider context of a season marked by major disruption and difficulty. He also referenced the backing previously given to Jurgen Klopp as evidence that the club values long-term stability.

‎Speaking about speculation regarding his future, Slot insisted missing out on elite European competition should not automatically lead to his dismissal. Liverpool are currently facing a tough battle in the Premier League table, sitting four points behind Chelsea and five behind Manchester United in the race for a top-five finish. Their next challenge comes with a crucial away fixture against Sunderland on Wednesday night.
‎Liverpool’s heavy spending during last summer’s transfer window has increased expectations, meaning failure to qualify would be widely considered a major failure. However, Slot believes owners Fenway Sports Group and sporting director Richard Hughes will evaluate the entire campaign rather than focusing solely on final league position. He pointed to Klopp’s 2022-23 season, when Liverpool still supported the German manager despite finishing outside the top four, a decision that eventually helped set up Liverpool’s 20th league title win two years later under Slot.
‎Slot admitted decisions about his future are beyond his control. He explained that while previous examples offer encouragement, they do not provide certainty. He added that Liverpool, unlike some clubs, considers more than results when assessing managers, including player progress, team development, and unique seasonal circumstances.
‎Liverpool’s campaign began under emotional strain following the death of Diogo Jota last July, which had a profound effect on the squad. The team has also been heavily impacted by injuries, with star striker Alexander Isak suffering a broken leg that significantly weakened Liverpool’s attack and reduced tactical flexibility.
‎Several senior players have also experienced dips in form, including Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo. At the same time, many new arrivals from the summer transfer window have needed time to settle. These issues have contributed to a poor run that has seen Liverpool win just six of their last 20 league matches. Slot described this season as by far the most challenging of his coaching career but believes he is at a club that values structured progress rather than short-term reactions.
‎Liverpool’s struggles have been further magnified by the success of former players. The decision to sell Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5 million has been questioned, particularly as Diaz has produced 18 goals and 14 assists in Germany while Liverpool have struggled to find goals during Isak’s injury absence. Slot defended the move, saying it reflects Liverpool’s sustainability-based strategy. He also suggested criticism might not exist if Isak had remained available.
‎Attention now turns to Liverpool’s upcoming match against Sunderland, who are unbeaten at home this season. Squad availability remains a major concern, with roughly 22 players currently fit for selection. Dominik Szoboszlai will miss the match through suspension after his red card against Manchester City, joining injured defenders Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong on the sidelines.
‎With Joe Gomez only just returning to training, Slot may be forced to deploy Wataru Endo or Curtis Jones in defence. Meanwhile, Calvin Ramsay is still not considered ready for first-team involvement. Liverpool urgently need a win to maintain pressure on Chelsea and Manchester United, but ongoing injury issues and inconsistent attacking performances continue to complicate Slot’s task.
