‎Liverpool Contract Talks Intensify as Arne Slot Pushes to Keep Ibrahima Konate Amid Real Madrid Interest

‎Manager Arne Slot has shared fresh details about the future of defender Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool FC, with the player entering the final stretch of his current contract at Anfield. The centre-back has been heavily linked with a potential free move to Real Madrid CF when the 2025–26 season ends, though Slot has openly stated his desire for the French defender to extend his stay with the club.

‎Konate’s situation remains unresolved as his deal nears expiration. The defender has experienced a challenging season overall, but his recent performances have stood out, especially after returning from compassionate leave following his father’s death. Upon his comeback appearance against Newcastle United FC, Konate found the net and spoke emotionally about the difficult period he and his family had endured. Speaking with TNT Sports, he explained that the previous two weeks had been extremely tough but acknowledged that such moments are part of life. He also mentioned how the manager encouraged him not to rush his return, yet he felt it was important to rejoin and support the squad, praising the powerful match atmosphere and stressing the importance of unity through the season’s final stretch.
‎Earlier reports suggested Real Madrid were strongly considering signing him, though interest was said to have cooled earlier in the campaign following inconsistent performances. Slot confirmed discussions are ongoing and made it clear the club’s intentions are to keep the defender. He stated that negotiations themselves demonstrate how much the club values him and emphasized that talks would not be happening if Liverpool did not want him to remain.
‎The manager also highlighted Konate’s recent strong run of performances. While acknowledging that earlier in the season the defender sometimes faced criticism after small errors led directly to goals, Slot maintained that his overall contributions remained positive. He also praised Konate’s defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk, pointing out both players’ consistent fitness and importance to the team. According to Slot, their quality and the lack of depth behind them make them essential to the squad.
‎Van Dijk himself has publicly encouraged his teammate to stay. He described Konate as a close friend and emphasized how contract negotiations are rarely straightforward. Reflecting on his own experience from the previous year, he noted that these situations take time and involve multiple parties. While expressing his personal wish for Konate to remain, he acknowledged that final decisions rest with the club, the player, and his representatives. He also praised Konate as a world-class defender and a key leader both on and off the pitch.
‎Looking ahead, supporters must wait to see whether Konate commits his future to Liverpool or seeks a new challenge elsewhere. The club has already taken steps to reinforce its defence by agreeing to sign Stade Rennais FC defender Jeremy Jacquet for next season. Meanwhile, Slot’s team is preparing to return to competition on Saturday against Brighton & Hove Albion FC in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
