Liverpool Leaders Respond With Salah Exit Talk Building Toward Summer Window

‎Captain Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool FC has finally addressed ongoing speculation surrounding close teammate Mohamed Salah, as rumours continue suggesting the Egyptian forward could leave Anfield. ‎Both Van Dijk and Salah appeared to quiet talk of departures when they signed new contracts extending their stays until summer 2027. However, tensions resurfaced after Salah publicly criticised Liverpool in December 2025 when he was limited to substitute appearances. The 33-year-old accused the club of abandoning him during a difficult title defence in the Premier League.
‎Transfer rumours intensified but cooled slightly while Salah was away representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. Since returning to work under manager Arne Slot, he has regained importance, including scoring during a fourth-round FA Cup win against Brighton & Hove Albion.
‎Reports suggest major financial proposals from both Middle Eastern clubs and the Major League Soccer have already been presented to Salah. Despite this, Van Dijk hopes his fellow winner of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League will resist overseas opportunities.
‎Speaking about the uncertainty, Van Dijk explained the team is focused entirely on making the current season successful, adding that football’s unpredictability makes long-term outcomes impossible to guarantee. He stressed his personal wish for Salah to stay, noting their long friendship and shared experiences across successful and challenging periods. With both players having just over a year left on their deals, he said time will determine what happens next.
‎Van Dijk highlighted Salah’s ongoing value to the team, pointing to recent assists, records broken, and leadership on and off the pitch. He explained that while public attention often centres on goals, Salah contributes much more. The defender added that the forward’s high personal standards often attract criticism when scoring numbers dip, urging him to remain calm and continue influencing matches in multiple ways.
‎While Liverpool want to keep both senior stars for at least another 18 months, former Reds striker Stan Collymore suggested departures could happen sooner. Speaking to GOAL, he predicted Salah would likely play out the season but suggested one or both of Salah and Van Dijk could leave during the summer if Liverpool transition into what he described as a new era under Slot.
‎Collymore speculated that contract renewals may have been strategic while Liverpool assessed how newer attacking options such as Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz adapt. He suggested the club might eventually prioritise newer stars if they become central figures, potentially forcing older leaders out.
‎He also suggested Salah may have felt underappreciated after social media attention heavily welcomed new arrivals, possibly making him feel disrespected. Collymore questioned whether all attacking options can coexist or whether change is inevitable, predicting Salah could depart in the upcoming summer while Van Dijk might remain one additional season.
‎Although Van Dijk has given no signal he intends to leave as he approaches his 35th birthday, Liverpool are preparing for the future by targeting defensive reinforcements, including a £60 million deal for Jeremy Jacquet.
‎Salah has not publicly clarified his long-term intentions. For now, Liverpool fans wait as the record-breaking Egyptian star focuses on finishing the 2025–26 season strongly, with the club still competing for FA Cup success, Champions League progress, and a top-four league finish.
