Arsenal Join Race for West Ham Midfielder Mateus Fernandes Amid Arteta Midfield Plans

Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign Mateus Fernandes as manager Mikel Arteta continues plans to reshape the club’s midfield ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Arsenal F.C. boss is said to be eager to strengthen his midfield department, with Fernandes emerging as one of the club’s leading targets, according to reports from The Times. The Portuguese midfielder has impressed during his first season with West Ham United F.C., attracting attention from several major European clubs.

Fernandes has featured 36 times in all competitions for West Ham this season, scoring four goals and registering three assists. His performances in both defensive and advanced midfield roles have reportedly caught the attention of Arsenal, who value his technical quality and versatility.

Arteta is believed to favour adaptable midfielders capable of controlling different phases of play, and Fernandes fits that profile. Arsenal are also reportedly willing to consider offers for Christian Norgaard, who has struggled for regular minutes since joining from Brentford F.C.. If Fernandes arrives, he could compete alongside established midfield figures including Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

Interest in Fernandes stretches beyond Arsenal. Before his reported £38 million ($51m) move from Southampton F.C. to West Ham last summer, the midfielder was already attracting attention from multiple clubs across Europe. Reports claim 10 teams, including Atlético Madrid, were interested in signing him.

That interest has continued to grow, with Paris Saint-Germain F.C. now reportedly monitoring Fernandes as part of their long-term squad planning alongside targets such as Julian Alvarez.

Despite West Ham’s desire to keep Fernandes, the club’s financial position and league situation could complicate matters. The midfielder signed a five-year contract with the Hammers, including the option of an additional year, but the club’s Premier League future remains uncertain.

If West Ham were relegated to the Championship, the report suggests the club may have to sell the 21-year-old to comply with financial regulations and balance their finances. Southampton would also benefit financially from any future transfer due to a 15 per cent sell-on clause included in the original deal.

A bidding battle between Arsenal and PSG could therefore prove financially beneficial for West Ham, even if it means losing one of the division’s most promising young midfielders.

Before fully turning their attention to the transfer market, Arsenal remain focused on the closing stages of the campaign. Arteta’s side are preparing to face Burnley F.C. in their push for a first Premier League title in more than 20 years, while they are also set to meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
