Liverpool Edge Closer to Champions League Qualification After Brighton Defeat
Liverpool’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification received another major boost following the latest round of Premier League fixtures, with Bournemouth now the only side capable of denying the Reds a top-five finish.
Liverpool FC currently occupy fifth place, the final Champions League qualification spot, on 59 points. Their position had briefly remained under threat from Brighton & Hove Albion FC, who could still have overtaken them on goal difference if Liverpool lost their final game against Brentford FC and Brighton won both of their remaining matches.

However, Brighton’s hopes ended on Sunday after a 1-0 defeat away to Leeds United despite controlling large parts of the contest. The result means Brighton can now reach a maximum of 56 points, three fewer than Liverpool’s current tally.
Attention now turns to AFC Bournemouth, who remain the final realistic threat to Liverpool’s qualification hopes. Bournemouth are four points behind Arne Slot’s side and also possess an inferior goal difference.
Liverpool could officially secure Champions League football without playing if Bournemouth lose to Manchester City FC on Tuesday. A draw would keep the race mathematically alive, while a Bournemouth victory would push the battle into the final round of Premier League fixtures.
If Bournemouth defeat City, Liverpool would need to at least match Andoni Iraola’s side on the final day of the season to guarantee their place in Europe’s top competition.
There is also still a possibility for Liverpool to finish fourth. The Reds would need to defeat Brentford in their final match while Aston Villa FC lose their last game against title-chasing Manchester City. Villa had strengthened their own hopes with a 4-2 victory over Liverpool on Friday.
Another twist could emerge through the Europa League final. If Villa end the Premier League season in fifth place but defeat SC Freiburg in Wednesday’s final, an additional Champions League qualification spot would pass to the team finishing sixth.
As things stand, Bournemouth, Brighton, or Chelsea FC could benefit from that scenario.
Meanwhile, Brentford are unable to qualify for the Champions League despite sitting above Chelsea in the table. The specific combination of results required for Brentford to move ahead of Bournemouth would also hand Liverpool the victory needed to potentially push Villa into fifth place.
