The decision follows a difficult opening to the campaign, with the club sitting on a 10-17 record. Even after a dominant 17-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, the organization opted to make a change in leadership.
Cora, who previously played for the Red Sox, stepped into the managerial role in October 2017 and quickly made an impact. His first full season ended in triumph, guiding the team to a World Series title in 2018. In the meantime, Triple-A Worcester manager Chad Tracy will assume duties on an interim basis.
In an official statement, FSG chief and principal owner of Liverpool, John Henry, acknowledged Cora’s contributions. He highlighted the unforgettable 2018 season and expressed lasting appreciation for the influence Cora had both within the team and across the city.
Henry emphasized the emotional weight of the decision, describing it as particularly challenging due to Cora’s significance to the organization. He also extended gratitude to the coaching staff and their families, noting their commitment went beyond on-field responsibilities.
The timing of the dismissal makes history, as the 16-run victory recorded in Cora’s final game is the largest winning margin for a manager’s last match in the modern era of Major League Baseball.
Additionally, this marks the first in-season managerial change for the Red Sox since Jimy Williams was relieved of his duties in August 2001.
Fenway Sports Group’s portfolio stretches across several major sports properties, including Liverpool FC, the Red Sox, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, alongside ventures in NASCAR and the TMRW Golf League.
